About the magazine

Expanded Field is a journal and curatorial platform founded on the conviction that contemporary art and criticism must move beyond medium-specificity into a genuinely interdisciplinary terrain. Taking its name from Rosalind Krauss's seminal essay, the project operates at the intersection of visual art, writing, and research, publishing essays, artist projects, and interviews that interrogate the boundaries of practice. Its mission is to provide a rigorous yet accessible forum for emergent and under-represented voices, prioritizing criticality over trend and process over product. The journal maintains a deliberate pace, releasing issues infrequently to allow for depth and sustained attention.

Editorial focus

Expanded Field is an English-language journal for creative writing and image/text experimentation. The journal publishes original works of prose, poetry, visual art, and other experimental works not easily classified within genre boundaries. Under the direction of the student-led editorial board, located at the Department of Language, Literature, and Communication at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the journal offers an online and open-access platform for the exhibition of works from new to established, and national to international writers and artists.

Submitting your work

Reading periodJan 1 to Dec 31
Reading feeNo
PaymentNo payment
Response timeLess than 3 months
Simultaneous submissionsNo
Unsolicited submissionsNo

Before submitting, read at least two full issues to understand the journal's critical register and interdisciplinary scope. Proposals should articulate a clear conceptual framework rather than merely describe a project. Written submissions should be polished but not overworked; the editors favor clarity and argument over jargon. Visual contributions must be accompanied by a substantive critical text. Response times are typically 3–6 months; simultaneous submissions are discouraged. There are no fees, but the journal does not pay contributors—it offers a modest honorarium for commissioned work only.
