Editorial focus
The editors of Fabulist Magazine are pleased to announce that they will be opening a submissions window in fall 2025, with a focus on short, fantastical fiction of up to 1,000 words. For details on the editors’ interest, rate of pay, and to review their flash fiction contract, visit their website.
Submitting your work
Before submitting, read at least one full issue to internalize the magazine’s fabulist leanings; work that is merely genre fantasy or conventional realism will likely feel out of place. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify promptly upon acceptance elsewhere. For writing, send no more than three poems or one short story (under 3,000 words) in a single document; for art, submit up to five low-resolution images with a corresponding list of titles and mediums. Cover letters should be brief and factual—no elaborate bios or project statements unless requested. Response times tend to be slow (three to six months), so patience is part of the process. There are no reading fees for standard submissions, though occasional themed calls may carry a small fee to support contributors’ payments.
We value: Great writing (attention to sentence construction, an awareness of the poetry inherent in prose) Vivid settings that influence and engage the plot and character arcs Revelations of the self and the world we live in Sensitivity and alertness to the significant issues of our times Escapism Endings that are not punchlines
