About the magazine

Fantastic Other is an online literary and arts publication that operates without a fixed physical location, curating themed issues that bring together writing and visual art. Its founding ethos centers on the exploration of alterity—the strange, the uncanny, and the persistently other—as a generative force in contemporary culture. By releasing periodic calls for themed issues, such as the Winter 2027 issue 'TETHERED,' the publication invites contributors to interpret broad, evocative concepts through a discerning editorial lens. The journal maintains a clear mission: to foster a space where experimental and contemplative work can coexist, without sacrificing rigor for novelty.

Editorial focus

Since its founding in 2020, Fantastic Other ’s mission has been to provide a place to showcase the literary side of all things speculative. The editors welcome poetry, fiction, flash fiction, and art submissions that contain elements of science fiction, fantasy, magical realism, the paranormal, and surrealism. This is the home for the “other” side of literary fiction.

Before submitting, read at least one previous issue to understand the editorial tone and the level of thematic engagement expected. Respond to the call's theme with specificity—avoid generic interpretations. For written work, submit polished pieces that demonstrate awareness of the theme without being didactic; for visual art, ensure high-resolution images and a clear artist statement that connects to the theme. Follow all submission guidelines precisely, including deadlines and file formats. Since Fantastic Other is online-only, there is no physical portfolio to review, so your digital presentation should be immaculate. Expect a response time typical of small volunteer-run journals; patience and professionalism are appreciated.

As always, reading our past issues is the best way to learn what we like (you may find something you like as well). All of our past issues can be read on our website at no charge. We are searching for pieces that celebrate the genre elements of science fiction and fantasy but also offer something new. We love fairy tales told through new points of view, nuanced and diverse heroes, and stories that critique our society through a speculative lens. Got something strange taking up space in your writing folder? We would love to see it!
