About the magazine

FLARE Magazine is an independent online publication dedicated to contemporary poetry and short-form literary criticism. Founded in 2018 by a collective of poets and editors, it emerged as a response to the increasing homogenization of literary journals, aiming to provide a platform for work that is formally adventurous and intellectually rigorous. The magazine publishes quarterly issues, each organized around a thematic provocation rather than a fixed genre, encouraging contributors to interrogate the boundaries between poetry, prose, and critical writing. Its mission is to foster a community of readers and writers who value precision, risk, and the slow work of revision.

Editorial focus

FLARE Magazine publishes stories, hybrids, essays, art, and poetry about chronic illnesses, disabilities, and mental health, written by those who experience at least one of these. FLARE hopes to spread awareness about these topics and help others, whether they deal with these or not, to learn about these topics in order to foster an accepting community.

FLARE accepts submissions via its website during two reading periods each year: January 1–31 and July 1–31. Send up to five poems or one piece of short prose (under 2,000 words) in a single .docx or .pdf file. Include a brief cover letter with your name, contact information, and a third-person bio of no more than 50 words. Simultaneous submissions are permitted, but notify the editors immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. The magazine does not charge submission fees and pays contributors a modest honorarium upon publication. Response times average 4–6 weeks; please query only after 8 weeks. The editors appreciate work that demonstrates a clear engagement with the issue's theme, but they are equally open to unsolicited work that challenges their assumptions.

Avoid using lots of special formatting for poetry submissions, as WordPress struggles to do fancy formatting. Please submit prose and poetry in Microsoft Word, but if you don’t have this, PDF is fine. The stories, essays, and poems submitted must be about disabilities, chronic illnesses, and/or mental health. Art doesn’t have to be, but the artist must be disabled, chronically ill, and/or deal with mental health.
