About the magazine

Flyway: Journal of Writing and Environment is a literary journal founded in 2005 at Iowa State University's MFA Program in Creative Writing and Environment. It was established to explore the intersections of writing and the natural world, moving beyond traditional nature writing to embrace ecocriticism, environmental justice, and innovative poetics. The journal publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and hybrid work that engages with place, ecology, and the more-than-human world. Its mission is to foster a nuanced conversation about environmental issues through literary art, prioritizing work that is both aesthetically rigorous and ethically engaged.

Editorial focus

Based out of Iowa State University, Flyway: Journal of Writing and Environment is an online journal publishing poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art that explores the many complicated facets of the word environment—at once rural, urban, and suburban—and its social and political implications.

Please send us work that deals with the “environment” in unique and surprising ways. Flyway publishes on a rolling schedule. Work may be at home in Flyway if it occurs at the intersection of human experience and broad interpretations of environment: Ecology, science, natural history, and the environmental imagination, place, from natural to built, and ways that people interact with their environments.
