Editorial focus
Folio is a nationally-recognized literary journal sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences at American University in Washington, DC. Since 1984, Folio has published original works by both new and established authors in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, as well as original visual art. Made possible by the graduate student and faculty staff of AU's Creative Writing MFA program, Folio features poetry and prose that is bold and memorable alongside visual art that challenges.
Submitting your work
Artists should approach Folio with a clear understanding of its editorial focus: work that translates well to print, demonstrates conceptual depth, and engages with the photographic or visual language in a thoughtful manner. Before submitting, review several issues to grasp the tone and format. Proposals should include a concise artist statement, a cohesive body of work (not a random portfolio), and high-resolution images suitable for print. Folio values projects that are complete or near-complete rather than open-ended experiments. Patience is advised; response times can be long, and acceptance rates are low. Unsolicited submissions are welcome but must adhere strictly to the guidelines on the website.
