About the magazine

Gyroscope Review is a literary journal founded in 2014 that publishes poetry and short fiction on a quarterly basis. The journal was established with the conviction that literature should be accessible, engaging, and reflective of the diverse voices that constitute contemporary society. Its mission is to provide a platform for both emerging and established writers, with a particular emphasis on work that demonstrates a strong sense of craft, emotional resonance, and intellectual curiosity. The journal is known for its clean, uncluttered aesthetic and its commitment to publishing work that is both thought-provoking and approachable.

Unsolicited submissionsYes

Writers should submit previously unpublished poetry (up to 5 poems) or short fiction (up to 2,500 words) via the journal's online submission system. Gyroscope Review values clarity, originality, and emotional depth; work that relies on shock value or excessive experimentalism is less likely to find a home here. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify the editors immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. Response times typically range from 4 to 8 weeks. Reading periods are quarterly, with specific deadlines posted on the website. Always review a recent issue to understand the journal's aesthetic before submitting.

We like smart, snappy lines and delightful twists get our attention. We like well-shaped contemporary verse with deft use of images, unusual metaphors, and fine attention to detail. Most subjects are fair game; we will also consider science fiction, fantasy, and horror. We tend to dislike overt sentiment, breakup poetry, overly sappy love poetry, pieces more suited to live performance, political rants, pornography, and derogatory work. Rhyming poetry is a hard sell unless done well, but we do take it. We also take forms. Push the envelope, but be tasteful about it. Do not submit if you are not open to the occasional edit.
