Editorial focus
Haikuniverse publishes a haiku or micro poem every day. Haikuniverse is edited by Poetry Super Highway’ s Rick Lupert.
Submitting your work
Haikuniverse accepts submissions of original, unpublished haiku on a rolling basis. Poets should submit up to five haiku at a time, pasted into the body of an email (no attachments). The journal seeks haiku that demonstrate a strong grasp of the form's essentials: concrete imagery, a sense of season (kigo), and a moment of insight or juxtaposition. Both traditional 5-7-5 syllable patterns and free-form haiku are considered, but clarity and resonance are paramount. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify immediately if a piece is accepted elsewhere. Response times vary, but generally within a few weeks. Payment is not offered, but publication includes a byline and a brief bio. For full guidelines, visit the website.
We have a broad and liberal understanding of what a haiku is, rooted in its eastern origins, but also embracing the western understanding of the term, and sometimes purposefully delving into what some would call “micro poetry.” Emphasis on the “universe” part of “Haikuniverse.”
