Havik is an independent literary and arts journal founded on the belief that rigorous, unclassifiable work deserves a platform. Rooted in the tradition of small-press publishing, it prioritizes writing and visual art that resists easy categorization, favoring the raw and the formally adventurous over the polished and predictable. The journal operates as a collective effort, with editors who are themselves practicing artists and writers, ensuring that each issue reflects a genuine engagement with contemporary creative practice rather than market trends.

Editorial focus

Havik: The Las Positas College Journal of Arts, Literature, & Academic Writing , founded in 1978, has served as a student-led publication for the past four decades. The journal was established by David A. Wright, an English Department faculty member at Las Positas College. Havik won First Place Best of Show in Literary Magazines at the Spring 2022, Spring 2023, Spring 2024, Spring 2025, and Spring 2026 Associated Collegiate Press national conferences.
