About the magazine

Hearth Stories is an online literary and arts platform founded on the principle that narrative can be a site of radical intimacy. Since its inception, it has operated without a physical venue, instead cultivating a digital hearth around which writers, artists, and readers gather to explore the quiet, the domestic, and the politically charged nature of everyday life. The organization's mission is to publish work that resists spectacle in favor of interiority, prioritizing voices that attend to the textures of memory, place, and belonging. Its open reading periods are not merely submission windows but invitations to participate in a sustained conversation about what it means to make art from the materials of the immediate.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

Before submitting, read at least two full issues to understand the register Hearth Stories favors: work that is unhurried, sensorially specific, and comfortable with ambiguity. They are not looking for polished MFA-style epiphanies or overtly topical essays; instead, send pieces that trust the reader to sit with discomfort or quiet. Cover letters should be brief and free of self-mythologizing. Simultaneous submissions are typically accepted, but notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Because the platform is remote and volunteer-run, response times can be slow—wait at least three months before querying. Most importantly, do not pitch work that performs vulnerability; submit work that has already done the difficult internal labor of making vulnerability legible without demanding sympathy.
