Editorial focus
Hollow and Sky seeks poetry, prose, and visual work shaped by attention, memory, silence, and engagement with the natural world. The journal is drawn to work that listens closely to interior life, lived experience, and what often goes unnamed but felt.
Submitting your work
Proposals should demonstrate a genuine interest in engaging with the specific environment of the high desert and the residency's communal, process-oriented structure. Avoid generic project descriptions; instead, articulate how the site's isolation, scale, and history might inform your work. Applications are reviewed by a rotating panel of artists and curators, who value clarity of intent over polished presentation. Include a realistic timeline and budget, and be prepared to discuss how you would contribute to the daily life of the residency. There is no fee to apply, but selected artists are responsible for travel and a modest materials fee, with some need-based scholarships available.
Read the journal before submitting. Hollow and Sky is not looking for imitation, but each issue develops its own conversation, and familiarity with the work already published can help writers understand the journal’s sensibility. Trust specificity and restraint. The work that stays with the editor often begins with careful attention to something concrete, and allows meaning to emerge without overexplaining it. Above all, don’t count yourself out. Publication history and credentials have no bearing on editorial decisions; every submission is considered on the strength of the work itself.
