About the magazine

Hoot Review is an online literary and arts journal founded in 2018 with the aim of publishing concise, engaging work that resists the trend toward length and obscurity. The journal was established by a small collective of writers and editors who wanted a venue for flash fiction, short poetry, and micro-essays that could be read in a single sitting. Its core mission is to prioritize clarity, wit, and emotional resonance over theoretical density, making it accessible to a broad readership while maintaining high editorial standards. Since its inception, Hoot Review has published quarterly issues featuring both emerging and established voices, and it has become a reliable home for work that is sharp, humane, and formally tight.

Editorial focus

Hoot is a magazine on postcards. It publishes standalone pieces of writing under 150 words, with art to match. The idea is that current, quality literature should be shareable and accessible and that there is no reason why people can’t read an excellent piece of literature in one sitting.

Unsolicited submissionsYes

Before submitting, read at least one full issue to understand the journal's preference for short, polished work. Hoot Review typically accepts flash fiction under 1,000 words, poetry of no more than two pages, and micro-essays under 800 words. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but notify the editors immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with your name, contact information, and a one-sentence bio. Do not send more than three poems or two prose pieces per submission window. Response times are usually within four to six weeks; if you have not heard back after two months, a polite query is acceptable. The journal does not charge submission fees for general submissions, though it may offer expedited reading for a small fee during certain periods.

Postcards are small, so please don't go over the word limit. Also, one of the advantages of a postcard magazine is its shareability! So, please submit work that you could want hanging on a fridge (no brutal murder pieces, etc.).
