About the magazine

House of Arcanum is an independent arts organization founded in 2015 by a collective of artists and curators seeking to create a sustained, process-oriented alternative to the commercial gallery cycle. From its outset, the organization has prioritized durational research, material experimentation, and critical discourse over finished, market-ready objects. Its core mission is to support artists at pivotal moments in their practice through residencies, exhibitions, and public programs that emphasize inquiry over output. The House operates as a non-profit, with a rotating curatorial committee that includes artists, writers, and thinkers from diverse disciplines. Its programming is deliberately slow, often spanning months or years, allowing ideas to develop without the pressure of conventional exhibition timelines. This ethos has earned it a reputation as a sanctuary for rigorous, speculative work that might otherwise remain invisible within mainstream art economies.

Editorial focus

Literary fiction, not more than 1,500 words. Please no bio or cover letters. The editors love literary fiction with some magical realism, speculative elements, or mystery. Teach them something about life and keep it accessible! They are not the right place for traditional genre work. They decide quickly and nominate heavily. With a deliberately limited amount of work on their site, your chances of readership and nomination are good. Exclusivity and limited noise are new luxuries.

Artists should approach House of Arcanum with a clear sense of their own process and questions, rather than a polished portfolio. The organization values proposals that articulate a genuine inquiry, even if unresolved. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis for residencies and exhibitions, but the review cycle is slow—expect several months for a response. Include a concise project description (no more than two pages) that outlines your research interests, material concerns, and how a residency would advance your practice. Visual documentation is welcome but secondary to the written proposal. Avoid generic artist statements; instead, write as if corresponding with a peer. The House does not charge application fees, but also cannot offer production budgets for most opportunities. International applicants are encouraged, though visa support is limited. Above all, demonstrate patience and a willingness to engage with the House's communal, discursive environment.

No bios or cover letters, please! Let your work speak for itself! Literary fiction only, under 1,500 words.
