About the magazine

Indicia is a literary journal founded with the conviction that rigorous, attentive reading is a form of care. Since its inception, the publication has sought to create a space where writing is encountered on its own terms—without the noise of trend cycles or the pressure of immediate legibility. Its pages are dedicated to work that rewards patience: poetry, prose, and hybrid texts that foreground texture, ambiguity, and the slow accrual of meaning. The journal’s ethos is less about declaring a aesthetic position than about cultivating a sustained practice of editorial attention, one that treats each submission as a singular event rather than a data point in a larger argument.

indicia seeks to showcase a dynamic collage of passionate and profound voices hungry to produce art and write primarily in the English language. indicia enjoys feeling out the lengths to which language can be stretched, whether to convey a feeling, an experience, a humorous observation, a dire lesson, or whatever else a literary spirit needs to say.

Before submitting, read at least two full issues—not to reverse-engineer a house style, but to understand the journal’s temperament. Indicia favors work that is comfortable with its own difficulty and that does not explain itself prematurely. Send your most considered, least hurried pieces. Cover letters should be brief and factual; there is no advantage to flattery or biography. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable if noted, but please withdraw promptly if the work is placed elsewhere. Expect a response time that reflects the journal’s own pace: thorough, but not instantaneous. If declined, take it as a signal that the work may need more time to find its true shape, not as a verdict on its worth.

Follow the instructions on our submit page to make sure your work gets reviewed! We aim to publish two issues per year, depending on editors' availability.
