About the magazine

Ink & Ember is a small, independent press and reading series founded in 2016 in Portland, Oregon, dedicated to publishing and promoting writing that sits at the intersection of the literary and the visual. Its founding ethos emerged from a desire to create a space where text and image are not merely adjacent but are in active conversation, often resulting in hybrid works that challenge conventional genre boundaries. The organization operates with a lean, curator-driven model, producing two to three carefully designed chapbooks or artist books per year alongside a seasonal reading and exhibition series that pairs writers with visual artists. Core to Ink & Ember's mission is a commitment to materiality and slow craft. Each publication is treated as an object of care, with attention to typography, paper stock, and binding that reflects the content within. The press favors work that is formally adventurous yet emotionally resonant, and it maintains a deliberate distance from trend-driven publishing, instead nurturing long-term relationships with a modest roster of contributors. While its output is limited, its influence extends through its public programs, which foster a community of readers and makers who value the tactile and the intimate over the mass-produced.

Editorial focus

Ink & Ember is a quarterly, independent, interactive literary magazine. Created by published poet and content creator Cecilia Parker (@thejournalingrat, amongst other monikers), this magazine seeks to uplift and provide a space both for marginalized authors, poets, and artists, but also for its readers. Unlike most literary magazines, this magazine is interactive and seeks the engagement of its audience.

Submitting your work

Reading periodJan 1 to Dec 31
Reading feeNo
PaymentNo payment
Response timeLess than 3 months
Simultaneous submissionsYes
Unsolicited submissionsNo

Ink & Ember accepts submissions on a rolling basis but responds only to work that aligns closely with its aesthetic. Before submitting, familiarize yourself with at least two of its publications to understand its preference for hybrid, text-image work and its emphasis on materiality. Proposals for full-length manuscripts are rarely considered; instead, send a concise sample (no more than 10 pages) and a brief statement on how your work engages with the visual or the book as an object. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify immediately if your work is placed elsewhere. Due to limited capacity, response times can be slow (3–6 months), and the press does not provide editorial feedback on rejected submissions. For the reading series, pitches should include a clear thematic through-line and a list of potential collaborators.

We accept submissions of art, photography, poetry, and short prose (maximum 1,000 words) of fiction, nonfiction, or autobiography. Due to submission caps and artistic curation of the magazine, not all submissions will be accepted. This does not mean that we do not encourage artists and authors not to try to submit again at a later date. Those wishing to submit must read and comply with all submission rules as outlined on the website.
