About the magazine

Inlandia: A Literary Journey is an online literary journal founded in 2007 as a program of the Inlandia Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to celebrating the literary and cultural heritage of California's Inland Empire. The journal emerged from a commitment to amplify voices from a region often overlooked in national literary conversations, providing a platform for both emerging and established writers. Its mission is to publish compelling poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction that reflects the diversity and vitality of the Inland Empire and beyond, fostering a community of readers and writers through accessible, high-quality digital publication.

Editorial focus

Inlandia: A Literary Journey is the literary journal of Inlandia Institute, a literary nonprofit. The journal publishes two issues per year: Fall is open to all, but special consideration is given to those works or writers with a tie to the Inland Southern California region. Spring is guest-edited by a team of teen guest editors and features creative work in all genres exclusively by teens. Occasional special projects with a focus will publish on the blog or as standalone issues.

Writers should familiarize themselves with the journal's aesthetic by reading recent issues, which often feature work with a strong sense of place, character, and emotional resonance. Submissions are typically open for poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, with occasional themed calls such as flash fiction. Follow the guidelines on the website carefully, including word limits and formatting. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Response times vary, so patience is advised. The editors value clarity, originality, and voices that reflect diverse experiences.

Please be sure to read all guidelines. If you are not a teenager, do not submit to the spring all-teen issue. Anyone may submit for the consideration for the fall issue. All genres accepted, including art, poetry, nonfiction and fiction of all stripes. Watch the website for occasional special guest-edited issues, like one in 2023 dedicated to libraries and librarians.
