About the magazine

Inquisitive Eater: New School Food is a digital publication affiliated with The New School in New York City. Founded in the early 2010s, it emerged from the university's commitment to interdisciplinary inquiry, treating food as a lens through which to examine culture, politics, and the arts. The publication publishes essays, reportage, poetry, fiction, and visual art that engage with food's myriad meanings—from the intimate rituals of the table to the global systems of production and consumption. Its mission is to foster a critical and creative conversation around food, one that is as attentive to pleasure and memory as it is to justice and sustainability.

Editorial focus

The best food writing is not just about what’s on the plate, but is, like all literature, also interested in language, psychology, and the most pressing issues of the day. The Inquisitive Eater: New School Food provides a forum for artists and academics to explore the intersections between food and family, the environment, politics, economics, social justice, and media.

Unsolicited submissionsYes

Inquisitive Eater welcomes submissions of essays, fiction, poetry, and visual art that engage with food in a substantive way. Before submitting, read several pieces on the site to understand the range and tone of the work they publish—it tends toward the reflective and the critically engaged rather than the merely descriptive. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify them promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with your submission, and be patient: as a small, university-affiliated publication, response times can be slow. They are particularly interested in work that crosses disciplinary boundaries and brings fresh perspectives to familiar subjects.

Poetry: up to two poems may be submitted for consideration. Fiction: please submit one fiction piece at a time. Ideally each submission will fall under 4,000 words. Nonfiction/Essay: please submit one nonfiction piece at a time. Ideally each submission will fall under 4,000 words. Visual Art: up to five works of visual art may be submitted for consideration. Only previously unpublished work will be considered. Simultaneous submissions welcome, but let us know if your work is accepted elsewhere.
