About the magazine

Interlochen Arts Academy, founded in 1962 as the nation's first independent boarding school for the arts, is a preeminent institution for young artists in grades 9–12. Situated on a 1,200-acre campus in northern Michigan, it offers rigorous pre-professional training in creative writing, music, theatre, dance, visual arts, and film. The academy's ethos is rooted in the belief that intensive artistic practice, coupled with academic study, fosters both technical mastery and creative independence. Its creative writing program, led by faculty who are active writers, emphasizes craft, revision, and the development of a distinct voice within a supportive community of peers.

Submitting your work

Reading periodOpen now

For the Virginia B. Ball Creative Writing Scholarship Competition, applicants should submit a portfolio of original work that demonstrates both technical skill and a distinctive voice. The selection committee values authenticity, risk-taking, and evidence of serious commitment to the craft. Carefully proofread your manuscript, adhere strictly to genre and length guidelines, and consider including a range of forms (poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction) if permitted. A compelling personal statement that articulates your artistic journey and goals can strengthen your application. Deadlines are firm; plan to submit well in advance. Financial need is considered separately from artistic merit, so do not hesitate to apply if you require assistance.
