About the magazine

Iron Oak Editions is an independent literary press founded in 2012 with the conviction that serious fiction and short story collections deserve a patient, design-forward publishing model. Operating outside the consolidation pressures of commercial publishing, the press has built a catalog defined by editorial restraint and an emphasis on the sentence as a unit of care. Its core mission is to publish debut and mid-career writers whose work demonstrates formal ambition without sacrificing emotional legibility, often in editions that treat the book as a physical object worthy of attention.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

Iron Oak Editions accepts queries for novels and short story collections, but only during announced reading windows. Do not send full manuscripts unsolicited. A query should include a concise cover letter, a one-page synopsis, and the first ten to fifteen pages of the manuscript. The press values clean prose, a clear sense of narrative architecture, and evidence that the writer has read contemporary literary fiction beyond the bestseller lists. Response times are typically three to six months; simultaneous submissions are accepted but require immediate notification upon acceptance elsewhere. Because the press operates with a small staff, patience and professionalism in correspondence are noted.
