About the magazine

Jelly Squid is an independent online platform and curatorial project dedicated to experimental and interdisciplinary art. Founded in the early 2020s, it emerged as a response to the need for more fluid, non-hierarchical spaces for artistic exchange. The organization operates without a permanent physical location, instead functioning as a nomadic entity that manifests through digital exhibitions, temporary physical interventions, and collaborative publications. Its core mission is to support artists who work across boundaries—whether between media, disciplines, or cultural contexts—and to foster a community that values process, dialogue, and risk-taking over commercial viability.

Editorial focus

Jelly Squid is a literary magazine that uplifts emerging writers and artists. Based in the Pacific Northwest, Jelly Squid publishes three issues a year featuring art, poetry, and prose from writers from all over the country. Jelly Squid seeks to shine a light on work from previously unpublished and emerging writers, but accepts work from writers of all backgrounds and experience levels.

Artists interested in approaching Jelly Squid should first familiarize themselves with its past projects and curatorial themes, which often revolve around experimentation and interdisciplinary practice. Submissions are typically accepted via email or through periodic open calls announced on the website and social media. When submitting, include a concise artist statement, a selection of recent work (with images or links), and a clear proposal if responding to a specific call. Given the platform's emphasis on process, it is advisable to articulate your working methods and conceptual inquiries rather than focusing solely on finished products. Patience is key, as responses may take time due to the small team.

Though we recommend that you read through our issues before you submit to get a general idea of what we like, don’t be afraid to send us your work even if you aren’t sure whether or not it'll be a good fit for us! We like variation, and often the sort of work we’re looking for changes based on factors like issue themes.
