About the magazine

JONAHmagazine is an independent online literary and arts journal founded in 2014 by a collective of writers and artists seeking a space for work that engages with the complexities of contemporary experience. From its inception, the magazine has prioritized writing and visual art that is formally adventurous, emotionally resonant, and unafraid of moral or spiritual inquiry. Its name evokes the biblical prophet—a figure of reluctance, exile, and eventual reckoning—signaling an editorial interest in voices that speak from the margins or after periods of silence. The magazine publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art on a rolling basis, with issues released quarterly. Its mission is to foster a community of readers and makers who value depth over trend, and to provide a platform for emerging and underrepresented artists alongside established ones.

Editorial focus

JONAHmagazine is comprised of stories. Stories of journeys, in space, in time, in the heart, or in the mind. Beginnings, endings, triumphs and frustrations, odysseys of the spirit. Poetry, prose, true stories, memoir. Tales humorous or not. Fish stories, big fish stories. Lies. Stories that come from the soul, or that steal it. Stories that derive from the sky or the deep blue sea, or from nothing and nowhere.

Before submitting, read at least one full issue to understand the magazine's aesthetic range. JONAHmagazine favors work that is polished but not overworked, and that demonstrates a clear voice or vision. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with your submission, mentioning any relevant publications or influences, but avoid excessive self-promotion. For visual art, submit high-resolution images with a descriptive list. Response times vary, but generally fall within 4–8 weeks. The magazine does not charge submission fees for standard submissions, though occasional themed calls may have a small fee to support production costs.

Poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, maximum one prose piece and/or three poetry pieces per submission. Poems should be moderate in length, prose maximum 2,500 words. If accepted for publication, please refrain from submission for next edition, wait until the one after that. Illustrations (JPG or JPEG preferred) may accompany the written material but will not necessarily be accepted, and should be in “good taste.” If accepted elsewhere, inform us so an embarrassing situation of simultaneous acceptance does not occur.
