About the magazine

Kettle's Yard is the University of Cambridge's modern and contemporary art gallery, founded on the collection and vision of Jim Ede, a former curator at the Tate. Ede and his wife, Helen, transformed a row of cottages into a home where art and daily life intertwined, opening it to students in 1957. The ethos remains: art should be lived with, not merely observed. Today, Kettle's Yard comprises the original house, a contemporary gallery, and a dynamic programme of exhibitions, residencies, and public events. Its mission is to foster intimate, thoughtful encounters with art, bridging historical and contemporary practices.

Submitting your work

Reading periodOpen now

Kettle's Yard's open calls are infrequent and often tied to specific opportunities, such as the annual Open Call for artists based in the East of England. Applicants should first review the detailed guidelines on the website, which emphasise a strong fit with the organisation's ethos of contemplative, process-oriented work. Proposals should demonstrate critical rigour and an awareness of the unique context of Kettle's Yard—both its historical house and contemporary gallery. Avoid generic statements; instead, articulate how your practice engages with intimacy, materiality, or site-specificity. The selection process is competitive, so ensure your submission is polished, concise, and adheres strictly to the stated requirements.
