About the magazine

L'Esprit Literary Review is an independent literary press and review founded in 2018 by a collective of writers and editors committed to work that resists easy categorization. Its ethos is one of attentive, slow reading: the review publishes criticism and fiction that values texture, ambiguity, and intellectual risk over market-driven polish. The press's Indirect Books imprint extends this mission to book-length works, with a particular interest in novellas that operate at the edges of genre and convention.

Submitting your work

Reading periodOpen now

Read several issues of the review before submitting. The editors favor work that demonstrates a felt engagement with language and form, not merely competent storytelling. For the Indirect Books novella call, send a complete manuscript with a brief, non-pitchy cover letter that situates the work in a literary context. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if the work is placed elsewhere. Response times are typically three to six months; a polite query after that period is appropriate.
