About the magazine

The London Arts-Based Research Centre (LABRC) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation founded in 2019 to foster dialogue between artistic practice and academic research. Emerging from a network of artists and scholars seeking alternatives to conventional conference formats, it provides a platform for practice-led inquiry, interdisciplinary exchange, and experimental modes of knowledge production. Its core mission is to support work that treats art-making as a rigorous form of research, without privileging one discipline over another. Through its annual conference, peer-reviewed journal, and themed calls for submissions, LABRC cultivates a community where artists, writers, and researchers can test ideas in a supportive yet critically engaged environment.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

LABRC welcomes submissions from artists, writers, and researchers at any career stage. Before applying, review the specific theme of the current call—past themes have included 'Chaos' and 'Indelible'—and consider how your work engages with it in a substantive, not merely illustrative, way. Proposals should clearly articulate the research dimension of your practice, whether through a written paper, artistic contribution, or hybrid format. The selection process favours clarity, originality, and critical reflection over polished but empty rhetoric. For the journal, adhere strictly to word limits and formatting guidelines; for the conference, a concise abstract that outlines your method and argument is more effective than a broad survey. Given the Centre's ethos, collaborative and experimental formats are encouraged, but they must be grounded in a coherent research question.
