About the magazine

Meow Meow Pow Pow Lit is an independent literary press and online magazine founded in 2013 by a collective of writers and artists seeking a home for work that defies easy categorization. From its inception, the press has championed writing that is formally inventive, emotionally raw, and unafraid of sentiment or strangeness. Its name—playful, onomatopoeic, and slightly absurd—signals an ethos of serious play: the belief that literature can be both rigorous and joyful, accessible and experimental. The press publishes poetry, flash fiction, and hybrid texts, often in handmade, limited-run chapbooks that treat the book as an art object. Its online magazine features a rotating cast of voices, with an emphasis on emerging and underrepresented writers. Over the past decade, Meow Meow Pow Pow Lit has built a reputation for its discerning yet generous editorial eye, fostering a community that values risk-taking over polish and authenticity over trend.

Editorial focus

Meow Meow Pow Pow is a weekly broadside that revolves around a theme. It publishes one piece a week around a premise that lasts three months, with four different themes throughout the year.

Meow Meow Pow Pow Lit accepts submissions of poetry, flash fiction (under 1,000 words), and hybrid work. They prioritize writing that is surprising, voice-driven, and emotionally honest—work that might not fit elsewhere. Before submitting, read several pieces from their online magazine to understand their aesthetic range. They appreciate cover letters that are brief and personal, and they welcome simultaneous submissions as long as you notify them promptly of acceptance elsewhere. Response times vary but are generally within 1–3 months. They do not charge reading fees for online submissions, though chapbook contests may have a fee. When submitting, include a short bio (50 words max) and your contact information. They are particularly interested in work from BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and disabled writers. Do not send previously published work unless explicitly requested. For chapbook proposals, query first with a sample and a brief description of the project.

Meow Meow Pow Pow is looking for prose and poetry that is exciting, incinerating, inclusive, accessible, and audacious. We love unpublished writers just as much as we love published writers (sometimes even more so). MMPP is more likely to publish work that is provocative and invigorating rather than overly complicated pieces of pomposity. Excite us with your garden-fresh flash and titillate us with your gutsy poems. Let us home your vigorous words and create art to accompany them. And after we marry your wise wordery, we’ll bring the lit to the great outdoors.
