About the magazine

Midcult is an online platform and editorial project that operates at the intersection of contemporary art, literature, and critical writing. Founded as a response to the homogenizing effects of both mass and elite culture, it takes its name from the mid-century sociological term 'midcult'—the debased middlebrow that mimics avant-garde difficulty while smoothing over its radical edges. Rather than simply critique this phenomenon, Midcult adopts it as a curatorial lens, commissioning and publishing work that self-consciously navigates the space between accessibility and experimentation. The platform's core mission is to foster a community of artists and writers who are critically engaged with the conditions of cultural production, without resorting to either populist simplification or hermetic obscurity.

Editorial focus

Midcult* is a Los Angeles–based literary magazine, published both online and in-print, with a focus on writing that successfully walks the tightrope of being both intelligent and entertaining, all while capturing our world in its infinite complexities.

Midcult accepts submissions on a rolling basis, with periodic themed calls. Before submitting, read several recent pieces to understand the editorial tone—work that is conceptually ambitious yet lucid, and that engages critically with its own conditions of production. They favor writing that is both rigorous and readable, and art that resists easy categorization. Include a brief cover letter that contextualizes your work within the platform's interests, but avoid over-explaining. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify them promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Response times vary; a polite query after three months is appropriate.
