About the magazine

Midnight & Indigo is a literary organization dedicated to celebrating and amplifying Black women writers. Founded with the mission to provide a platform for voices that have historically been marginalized in publishing, it publishes an annual literary journal and maintains an active online presence. The journal features short fiction, essays, and poetry by Black women from around the world, and the organization also offers workshops, mentorship, and educational opportunities. Its ethos is rooted in community, craft, and the belief that Black women's stories are essential to the literary landscape.

midnight & indigo is a literary journal dedicated to celebrating the voices of Black women writers worldwide. The editors publish work that is as varied and vibrant as the writers behind it. Stories explore everything from everyday moments to imagined futures, always centering the emotional truth of the narrative. In these pages, you’ll find fiction, essays, and layered storytelling that opens up entire worlds, both familiar and unknown, and invites you to linger inside them.

Writers should review the submission guidelines carefully on the website, noting reading periods and genre-specific requirements. Midnight & Indigo primarily seeks work by Black women, and submissions should reflect a commitment to craft and authentic storytelling. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify promptly if work is placed elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with publication history if applicable, and ensure the manuscript is formatted professionally. Response times vary, so patience is appreciated. The editors value voices that are distinctive and narratives that resonate with the Black women's experience in its many forms.

In addition to our literary journal, we publish works online, facilitate writing classes, and offer developmental editing services. To date, we have published 400+ Black women storytellers across the U.S., Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, Canada, Asia, and Australia. Launched in 2022, our Writing Program has served 600+ students since its inception. We are 100% Black woman–owned.
