Submitting your work
Before submitting, carefully review several recent issues to understand the journal's aesthetic and editorial preferences. Modern Literature favors work that demonstrates a strong sense of voice, formal innovation, and emotional resonance; it is less interested in straightforward narrative or traditional lyric poetry unless it brings something new to the form. Submissions are accepted year-round via the online portal, but response times can be slow (3-6 months), so patience is advised. Simultaneous submissions are permitted, but please notify immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter that contextualizes your work, but avoid lengthy biographical statements. The editors appreciate concise, well-edited submissions and are committed to providing feedback when possible, though due to volume, this is not guaranteed. For print issues, only previously unpublished work is considered; online features may include reprints if they are not widely available.
Modern Literature publishes all genres of literature—fiction, poetry, nonfiction, essays on arts and politics, etc. Please do visit the site. You can send your literary articles as Word doc attachments to: [email protected]
