Editorial focus
Moko is a nonprofit journal that publishes fiction, poetry, visual arts, and nonfiction essays that reflect a Caribbean heritage or experience. Their goal is to create networks with a Pan-Caribbean ethos in a way that is also sensitive to their location within the Virgin Islands. The editors embrace diversity of experience and self-expression.
Submitting your work
Moko accepts submissions through its website during two reading windows each year (typically March–April and September–October). There are no fees for standard submissions, though a small number of expedited slots are offered for a fee to support the magazine. Work should be previously unpublished, and simultaneous submissions are discouraged. Response times are slow—often three to six months—so patience is essential. The editors favor work that demonstrates a strong sense of voice and attention to form over polished but generic pieces. Before submitting, read at least one full issue to understand the magazine’s aesthetic range; sample copies are available for purchase at cost.
All writing for Moko should be double-spaced with one-inch margins in a Word (DOC) file. For poetry, submit three to five poems in a single document. For all other writing, you may submit up to 3,000 words. Submissions that do not fit the editorial focus and mission will not be accepted.
