About the magazine

MUSE Literary Journal, published by Riverside City College, has served as a vital platform for emerging and established voices since its founding in 1962. Rooted in the community college system, the journal maintains a commitment to accessibility and artistic excellence, publishing poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and visual art from a diverse range of contributors. Its longevity reflects a sustained dedication to the literary arts and a belief in the transformative power of creative expression. Over the decades, MUSE has evolved into a nationally recognized publication while retaining its local ties. The journal is produced by students under the guidance of faculty advisors, offering hands-on experience in editing, design, and production. This educational mission is central to its identity, fostering a collaborative environment where emerging editors and writers learn from one another. The journal's pages have featured a wide array of voices, from first-time submitters to award-winning authors, all united by a shared commitment to thoughtful, engaging writing.

Editorial focus

MUSE, based in California’s Inland Empire, is especially looking to publish work from underrepresented or misrepresented groups, such as Black, Indigenous, Latinx and other people of color, disabled people, LGBTQ+, present/formerly incarcerated people, and others from a culturally and linguistically diverse background. The editors seek and welcome writers of all races, sexual orientations, gender identities/expressions, ability statuses, religions, socioeconomic classes, veteran status, and educational backgrounds.
