About the magazine

New Guard is a literary and arts review founded with the aim of showcasing emerging voices alongside established ones. Since its inception, it has maintained a commitment to publishing work that is both innovative and accessible, bridging the gap between experimental and traditional forms. The review operates with a ethos of fostering a community of writers and artists who are attentive to craft and willing to take risks. Its core mission is to provide a platform for work that might otherwise be overlooked by mainstream publications, emphasizing quality and originality over name recognition.

Editorial focus

The New Guard is a contest-centered, independent literary review, publishing 35+ emerging writers each volume from the United States and abroad. They proudly publish in print and have short pieces published online on their BANG! page. Currently their print literary review is closed to submissions as they transition into their new press, High Frequency Press. More can be found at www.highfrequencypress.com .

Writers and artists should familiarize themselves with the review's aesthetic by reading recent issues. Submissions should demonstrate a strong command of craft, a unique perspective, and a willingness to engage with the contemporary moment. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify promptly if work is placed elsewhere. Follow the guidelines on the website carefully, and include a brief cover letter that contextualizes your work without over-explaining.

We host writing contests in fiction and poetry and welcome international submissions. We juxtapose tradition with experiment, the up-and-comer with the established writer, and create a new dialogue. Please read our submission guidelines for more information.
