About the magazine

Occulum is an online literary and arts journal founded in 2016, dedicated to publishing work that is formally inventive, emotionally resonant, and unafraid of the strange. Operating without a physical location, it has built a reputation as a nimble, discerning venue for contemporary poetry, short fiction, and hybrid texts. Its founding ethos centers on curatorial care rather than volume: each issue is assembled with an eye for pieces that unsettle expectations while remaining deeply human. The journal favors work that risks vulnerability and embraces the odd, the fragmentary, and the quietly devastating.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

Occulum accepts general submissions during announced reading periods, typically via email or Submittable. Before sending, read at least one full issue to gauge the journal's taste for the surreal, the lyric, and the unclassifiable. Submit 3–5 poems or one short prose piece (under 2,000 words) in a single document. Include a brief third-person bio and no more than a short cover note. Simultaneous submissions are generally permitted, but withdraw immediately if accepted elsewhere. Response times vary from two weeks to three months; a polite query after 90 days is acceptable. The editors value clean, proofread manuscripts and are unlikely to respond well to generic, mass-submitted work.
