About the magazine

Peregrine is a literary and arts journal founded in 2003 by the MFA Program for Poets & Writers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Named after the peregrine falcon—a species celebrated for its wide-ranging vision and precision—the journal embodies a commitment to publishing work that is formally adventurous, emotionally resonant, and attentive to the complexities of contemporary experience. From its inception, Peregrine has sought to balance the rigorous craft standards of an academic institution with an inclusive, outward-looking editorial stance, featuring poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art by both emerging and established voices. The journal is published annually and has earned a reputation for its discerning curation and elegant design. Its mission is to foster a vibrant literary community by providing a platform for work that challenges, moves, and illuminates, while also serving as a training ground for graduate student editors. Over two decades, Peregrine has remained dedicated to the belief that literature matters—not as a commodity, but as a vital means of human connection and inquiry.

Editorial focus

Peregrine has provided a forum for national and international writers since 1983 and is committed to finding exceptional work by established as well as emerging writers.

Peregrine accepts submissions through its Submittable portal, typically opening reading periods in the fall and winter. Writers should consult the website for specific guidelines, but generally, the journal seeks poetry (3-5 poems), fiction and nonfiction (up to 7,500 words), and visual art. Work should be previously unpublished. Simultaneous submissions are accepted with prompt notification of acceptance elsewhere. The editors appreciate work that demonstrates a command of language, a distinctive voice, and a willingness to take risks. Cover letters are optional but can provide context. Response times vary, often within 3-6 months. Contributors receive two copies of the issue and a modest honorarium. Given the journal's academic affiliation, writers may find it helpful to familiarize themselves with past issues to understand the aesthetic range. Peregrine values diversity and encourages submissions from underrepresented voices.

We seek fiction and poetry that is unpretentious and memorable. We welcome work reflecting diversity of voice. Surprise us! Include cover letter with sixty-word (max) bio. Please do not tell us what your story is about and how much our readers will love it. Please do not send a resume or enclose your manuscript in a folder. We are open to all styles, forms, and subjects (except greeting card verse), but we don’t accept work by or for children.
