About the magazine

The Philip Levine Prize at Fresno State is an annual poetry book contest administered by the MFA program in creative writing at California State University, Fresno. Established in honor of Philip Levine, the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and longtime Fresno faculty member, the prize reflects his commitment to poetry that speaks with clarity and emotional directness about work, place, and the lives of ordinary people. Since its founding, the prize has served as a bridge between the university's literary community and the wider world of contemporary poetry, offering a first or subsequent book publication to a poet of exceptional promise.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

Poets should submit a full-length manuscript of 48–80 pages, typically between January and March. The contest is open to poets at all stages, though the press often favors work with a clear voice and a sense of lived experience. Reading recent winners is advisable to gauge the aesthetic range. Include a brief bio and acknowledgments; simultaneous submissions are generally discouraged. The reading fee is modest, and the prize includes publication and a cash award. Because the judge changes annually, researching their work can help align expectations, but authenticity to one's own project remains paramount.
