About the magazine

Platform Review is the flagship critical writing initiative of Arts by the People, a New Jersey–based nonprofit dedicated to fostering public engagement with contemporary art. Founded in 2016, the platform emerged from a desire to create a sustained, thoughtful space for emerging and mid-career writers to respond to exhibitions across the New York and New Jersey region. Rather than offering quick takes, Platform Review commissions long-form reviews and essays that situate art within broader cultural, political, and aesthetic conversations, reflecting an institutional commitment to slow criticism and editorial mentorship.

Editorial focus

ARTS By The People strives to create an environment that welcomes and encourages writers at all stages of their craft with a particular focus on local voices. Its online journal, Platform Review , is focused on bringing this same tone of inclusivity and community. The editors want submissions from local (New Jersey, Philadelphia, and New York City) writers, both established and emerging.

Writers should familiarize themselves with the platform’s archive to understand its preference for reviews that balance descriptive attention with critical argument. Pitches should focus on exhibitions in the New Jersey/New York area and demonstrate awareness of the artist’s broader practice. While the editors are open to emerging voices, they expect proposals that are well-researched and clearly articulated. Response times can vary, so patience and a follow-up after several weeks are advisable.
