About the magazine

Poetry International is a literary magazine founded in 1997 by the Department of English and Comparative Literature at San Diego State University. Its founding ethos was to create a journal that would reflect the global reach of poetry, publishing both established and emerging poets from around the world. The magazine is committed to presenting a diverse range of voices and aesthetics, with a particular emphasis on translation and international poetry. Over the years, it has become a vital platform for cross-cultural literary exchange, featuring work in English and in translation, as well as critical essays and interviews. The C.P. Cavafy Poetry Prize, named after the renowned Greek poet, is one of its signature awards, recognizing a single outstanding poem with a substantial cash prize and publication.

Editorial focus

Poetry International is one of the oldest and most respected literary journals dedicated to publishing poetry from around the globe. Each issue of the print journal brings together original poems, portfolios, and translated work in English and the original language representing a rich diversity of countries and languages. PIOnline, its digital publication, offers book reviews, interviews, and a searchable archive of international poets and poems.

Poets should submit work that demonstrates a strong command of craft and a distinctive voice, with an openness to international perspectives. The magazine welcomes translations, but translators should secure rights and provide documentation. For the Cavafy Prize, submit a single poem that exemplifies originality and emotional resonance. Familiarize yourself with the magazine's aesthetic by reading recent issues, and adhere strictly to submission guidelines regarding length, formatting, and deadlines. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify promptly if your work is taken elsewhere.
