About the magazine

Founded in 1966 by poets Joel Oppenheimer and Anne Waldman, the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery has long served as a vital nexus for experimental and traditional poetries in New York City. Its Newsletter, published since 1967, extends this mission by offering a monthly forum for poetry, criticism, interviews, and translations that might not find a home in mainstream literary journals. The publication is deeply rooted in the Project's commitment to community, process, and the belief that poetry is a living, public art.

Editorial focus

The Poetry Project Newsletter is the Project’s quarterly publication for reviews, essays, interviews, poems, remembrances, and arts criticism. Published continuously since 1972 and freely available online, in bookstores around the U.S. and at the Project’s public events, the Newsletter is a place for poets to talk and think with each other about poetry and everything else.

The Newsletter prioritizes work that engages with the Poetry Project's ethos of experimentation and community. While there are no strict formal guidelines, poets are encouraged to read recent issues to understand the range of accepted work. Submissions are typically open year-round, but response times can be slow due to volunteer staffing. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Include a brief bio and note any connection to the Project's programs or history.

While Newsletter editors solicit most of the features and book reviews we print, if you have a pitch for a review, essay or interview that you think will be particularly engaging for our readers, please write to us at [email protected] . The Poetry Project Newsletter does not take poetry submissions.
