About the magazine

Prairie Margins is an independent arts organization rooted in the Great Plains, founded to support experimental and underrepresented voices in contemporary art and literature. Its ethos emerges from the region's vast, often overlooked landscapes, fostering work that engages with themes of isolation, resilience, and ecological consciousness. The organization operates without a fixed physical venue, instead partnering with local institutions and digital platforms to produce exhibitions, publications, and residencies that challenge urban-centric narratives in the arts.

Editorial focus

Prairie Margins is a national undergraduate literary journal based out of Bowling Green State University. The journal aims to publish emerging undergraduate writers and artists.

Artists should approach Prairie Margins with work that is conceptually rigorous and formally adventurous, particularly if it engages with themes of place, environment, or marginality. Submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis, but response times can be slow due to the volunteer-run nature of the organization. Include a concise artist statement and documentation of recent projects; avoid overly polished commercial portfolios in favor of process-oriented or site-specific proposals. There are no fees for submission, but selected artists are expected to contribute to production costs or fundraising efforts.

We aim to accept work that showcases in-depth knowledge of craft, and we enjoy navigating experimental work. Please check the website’s submission guidelines for the most up-to-date information.
