About the magazine

Quartet is a literary journal founded in 1981 by graduate students at the University of Arkansas, with a mission to publish poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction that demonstrates formal ambition and emotional precision. Over four decades, it has maintained a commitment to work that is both intellectually rigorous and accessible, avoiding the hermetic tendencies of some academic journals while resisting the pressures of commercial trend. The journal is currently based at the University of Arkansas and appears in print twice yearly, with a growing online presence that includes interviews and craft essays.

Editorial focus

൪uartet is published three times a year and is an online poetry journal designed by women over 50 to highlight the creativity of women 50 and over. They believe experience speaks for itself, that by fifty, one has accumulated enough courage to revel in their talents. They want to read poems that tackle difficult themes, that surprise and illuminate, that are genuine, that have momentum and play with language.

Quartet accepts submissions of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction through its online submission manager during designated reading periods, typically from September to November and January to March. Writers should submit no more than five poems or one prose piece of up to 7,500 words. The editors value work that is polished, surprising, and emotionally resonant; they are less interested in genre exercises or overtly topical pieces. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify the journal immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. Response times average three to six months, and the journal does not charge a submission fee for regular submissions, though a fee-based expedited option is available.

Please see our submission periods on our submissions page. Don’t risk rejection by not reading the guidelines fully and carefully.
