About the magazine

Red Ogre Review is an independent literary and arts journal founded in 2021 by a collective of writers and educators. Its name, drawn from a Japanese folk tale, signals a commitment to work that is fierce, unguarded, and pedagogically alive. The journal publishes poetry, fiction, and visual art, with a particular emphasis on writing that engages with education, community, and the transformative potential of language. The annual Poetry in Education Collection, launched in 2027, exemplifies this mission by gathering poems that explore teaching and learning as radical acts.

Editorial focus

Red Ogre Review is an online journal started by the graduate students from Lancaster University’s 2021 Creative Writing class. It primarily publishes poetry, critical essays, visual art, and music.

Simultaneous submissionsYes
Unsolicited submissionsYes

Submit work that is honest, accessible, and unafraid of sentiment or directness. The editors favor poems and stories that demonstrate a lived understanding of teaching, learning, or community. Avoid academic jargon and overly polished MFA-style verse. Read past issues to gauge tone. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if accepted elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter that explains your connection to education, if relevant.

We typically publish only one piece per author. For poetry submissions, in particular, it can be helpful to err on the side of submitting more pieces rather than fewer. We’re also actively interested in publishing authors based outside of the United States.
