About the magazine

Founded in 1976 by a collective of Chicago poets, RHINO Poetry is an independent literary annual that has sustained a commitment to publishing work that is formally adventurous and emotionally resonant. From its origins as a stapled chapbook, it has evolved into a nationally distributed journal while retaining a fiercely independent, editor-run ethos. The magazine's mission is to provide a platform for emerging and established voices alike, with a particular openness to poems that resist easy categorization—whether in free verse, received forms, or hybrid modes. Each issue is curated by a rotating editorial board, ensuring a diversity of aesthetic perspectives and a resistance to monolithic taste.

Editorial focus

RHINO is a high-quality, perfect-bound annual journal including poems, event updates, and monthly e-zine RHINO Reviews . Print issues are re-released in a digital archive one year after distribution, increasing circulation to 8000+ unique annual visitors. RHINO invites traditional or experimental work reflecting passion, originality, artistic conviction, and a love affair with language. The editors encourage emerging and established writers in the U.S. and around the world. Submissions are read by multiple editors with eclectic tastes.

RHINO accepts submissions of poetry, translations, and short prose (flash fiction and nonfiction) during its annual reading period, typically from April 1 to June 30. Work should be previously unpublished. Submit 3–5 poems or one prose piece of up to 1,000 words via Submittable. There is no fee for general submissions, though a small fee applies for expedited or contest entries. Editors appreciate cover letters that are brief and focus on the work itself; simultaneous submissions are allowed but please withdraw immediately if accepted elsewhere. Response times average 3–6 months. Reading the current issue before submitting is strongly encouraged to gauge aesthetic fit.

Online submissions strongly preferred. We consider: poetry (up to five poems or five pages); translations of poetry; flash fiction (500 words max). We do not consider work that has been previously published on any website or in any print publication; unsolicited reviews or interviews. We’re an active contributor to the Chicago literary scene and coordinate several Chicago-area readings and workshops a year, as well as AWP-related events; we’d love to see you!
