About the magazine
Founded in 1967 at Roanoke College, the Roanoke Review is one of the oldest continuously published literary magazines in the American South. From its inception, the journal has balanced a commitment to formal craft with an openness to experimental and hybrid work, earning a reputation for curating writing that is both accessible and artistically ambitious. Its pages have featured early work by writers who went on to significant careers, and it remains a vital venue for emerging and established voices alike. Today, the Review publishes two annual issues—one print, one online—with a focus on poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, occasionally venturing into visual poetry and cross-genre forms. The journal is edited by faculty and students at Roanoke College, fostering a pedagogical ethos that values close reading and editorial care. Its mission is to provide a platform for diverse perspectives while upholding the standards of literary excellence that have defined its history.
Submitting your work
Reading periodOpen now
Writers should submit polished work that demonstrates a strong command of language and a clear sense of purpose. The editors appreciate writing that takes risks while remaining grounded in craft. For visual poetry, ensure that the visual and textual elements are integrated meaningfully, not merely decorative. Familiarize yourself with recent issues to understand the journal's aesthetic range. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Expect response times of 2-4 months; query only after that period. Include a brief cover letter with your submission, and adhere strictly to genre guidelines on the website.
