Editorial focus
Room is Canada’s oldest feminist literary journal, and has published fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, art, interviews, and book reviews for 40 years. Published quarterly by the West Coast Feminist Literary Magazine Society, also known as the Growing Room Collective, Room showcases writing and art by cisgender and transgender women, transgender men, Two-Spirit, and nonbinary people.
Submitting your work
Before submitting, read several recent issues to understand the range of work Room publishes. The magazine prioritizes writing by women, trans, and non-binary creators, so ensure your bio aligns with that mandate. For contests, follow guidelines precisely: use the specified theme if any, adhere to word limits, and submit via Submittable. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if accepted elsewhere. Expect response times of 3-6 months; polite queries after that period are acceptable. Room values polished, emotionally resonant work over trend-driven pieces, so revise carefully and consider a brief cover letter that contextualizes your submission without over-explaining.
Room publishes fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and art by folks of marginalized genders, including cisgender and transgender women, transgender men, Two-Spirit and nonbinary people (everyone but cis men). We specifically encourage writers of marginalized genders with additional overlapping underrepresented identities to submit their work. If you are unsure if your work is a fit for Room , please get in touch at [email protected] .
