About the magazine

Shabdaguchha is a bilingual literary journal founded in 1998 by poet and translator Hassanal Abdullah, with the aim of bridging Bengali and English literary traditions. Based in New York, it has consistently published poetry, fiction, and criticism from both established and emerging writers, fostering a dialogue between South Asian and global voices. The journal's ethos is rooted in linguistic inclusivity and cross-cultural exchange, often featuring translations and works that explore themes of migration, identity, and heritage.

Editorial focus

Shabdaguchha is an international poetry magazine celebrating twenty-eight years of publication. Over the years, the magazine featured poets from more than seventy-five countries and published World Poetry Anthology (Darklight, 2023) to commemorate its twenty-fifth anniversary. The Shabdaguchha Poetry Award, established in 2001, is presented every two years.

From the current issue: “Poetry possesses immense power. It travels farther than we imagine. The great Bengali poet Jibanananda Das once remarked, ‘Everyone writes, but only a few are poets.’ American poet Stanley Kunitz, in an interview with me, said, ‘All poets are from the same mother.’ As I attend literary festivals around the world, these words continue to resonate with me. They inspire me to reflect on my own journey and to build friendships with poets from different cultures and countries. Some endure for a lifetime.”
