About the magazine

Shot Glass Journal is a digital publication founded by Muse Pie Press, dedicated to short-form poetry—specifically, poems of 16 lines or fewer. Established in the early 2010s, it emerged from a desire to create a dedicated space for concise, imagistic verse that often gets overlooked in favor of longer works. The journal's ethos is rooted in the belief that brevity can amplify emotional resonance and precision, and it maintains a quarterly online presence that has become a reliable venue for practitioners of the short poem. Its companion publication, The Fib Review, focuses on Fibonacci poetry, further underscoring the press's commitment to formal innovation within constrained structures.

Editorial focus

Shot Glass Journal is an online poetry journal devoted to short poetry. Where other poetry journals publish poems of various lengths and forms, Shot Glass focuses on both free verse and form poetry of 16 lines or less. It believes in fostering emerging talent as well as publishing well established poets.

Poets should submit only poems of 16 lines or fewer, as longer works are automatically disqualified. Reading previous issues is essential to understand the journal's aesthetic, which favors imagistic clarity and emotional precision over narrative sprawl. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify immediately if a poem is taken elsewhere. Use the online submission system and include a brief bio in third person. Response times are typically within two months; query only after three.

Free form and form poetry are accepted as long as the poems submitted are 16 lines or under. Shot Glass has a U.S. and International poetry section so please indicate the country from which you are submitting.
