Editorial focus
Soundings East , the literary journal of Salem State University, has published quality fiction, poetry, and nonfiction for forty years. The magazine is published annually with support from the Center for Creative and Performing Arts. Edited by upper-level creative students under the aegis of an advisory editor from the writing faculty, Soundings East is distributed nationally, with recent press runs of 750 copies.
Submitting your work
Writers should submit previously unpublished work during the reading period, typically from September to January. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify immediately if accepted elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter and adhere to genre-specific guidelines: up to 5 poems, fiction/nonfiction up to 5,000 words. Electronic submissions via Submittable are preferred. Response times vary, so query after three months. The journal values clear, evocative writing and often features work with a strong sense of place or personal narrative.
Creative Nonfiction: Previously unpublished creative nonfiction works of up to 3,500 words. Fiction: Previously unpublished fiction works of up to 3,500 words. Poetry: Please submit up to three previously unpublished poems in a single file.
