About the magazine

SRPR (originally Spoon River Poetry Review) is a literary journal founded in 1976 at Illinois State University, named after Edgar Lee Masters's Spoon River Anthology. Its founding ethos is rooted in a commitment to contemporary poetry that is accessible yet formally astute, with a particular openness to work that engages narrative and place. Over the decades, SRPR has maintained a dual identity as a rigorous academic publication and a welcoming venue for emerging voices, publishing both established and lesser-known poets. The journal's core mission is to foster a vibrant poetry community through its print issues, annual contests, and now its open reading periods, which invite submissions from a broad range of poets.

Submitting your work

Reading periodOpen now

Poets should submit work that demonstrates a clear command of language and a distinctive voice, with attention to narrative or imagery. SRPR favors poems that are accessible on first reading but reveal deeper layers upon re-reading. Avoid overly abstract or purely conceptual pieces; instead, focus on precision and emotional truth. For open reading periods, submit early and adhere strictly to guidelines, as the journal receives a high volume of submissions. Include a brief cover letter with publication credits, if any, but let the work speak for itself.
