About the magazine

Star*Line is the official journal of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association (SFPA), founded in 1978 to champion speculative poetry as a vital literary form. From its mimeographed origins, it has evolved into a quarterly print and digital publication that consistently showcases the finest in science fiction, fantasy, horror, and mythic poetry. The journal’s mission is to provide a dedicated, discerning venue for poets working at the intersection of the speculative and the lyrical, fostering a community that values both imaginative reach and formal craft.

Editorial focus

Star*Line is a journal of speculative poetry, including not only science fiction, but fantasy, horror, and what lies between these genres. It also publishes relevant articles and science fiction poetry book reviews.

Unsolicited submissionsYes

Star*Line welcomes submissions of speculative poetry year-round, but poets should first read several issues to understand the journal’s aesthetic range—from traditional forms to free verse, from hard SF to quiet fantasy. Submit 3–5 poems at a time via the SFPA website’s submission portal, following the current guidelines precisely. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. Response times vary; query after three months. The editors value originality, emotional resonance, and a clear command of poetic technique over mere genre tropes.

Do not submit by post if you have access to e-mail. Nongenre subs will be rejected with extreme prejudice. Pays 4¢ per word, minimum $4.
