About the magazine

Streetlight Magazine is an online literary and arts journal founded in 2013 with the conviction that creative work thrives in the spaces between disciplines. Based in Charlottesville, Virginia, it publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art on a rolling basis, with a particular interest in work that attends to place, memory, and the quiet textures of daily life. The magazine takes its name from the idea of illumination without glare—a guiding metaphor for its editorial sensibility, which favors clarity, emotional precision, and formal care over spectacle or trend. Its mission is to provide a welcoming yet rigorous home for both emerging and established voices, and to foster a community of readers who value slowness and attention.

Editorial focus

Streetlight Magazine is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Its mission is to publish exceptional talent, both new and established, from its region and across the country. It publishes fiction, poety, creative nonfiction, essay, memoir, and art.

Streetlight Magazine accepts submissions year-round via its online portal. Simultaneous submissions are permitted, but please notify the editors promptly if your work is accepted elsewhere. Poetry submissions should include 3–5 poems; fiction and nonfiction up to 5,000 words. Visual artists may submit up to 5 images. All work must be previously unpublished. Response times typically range from 4–8 weeks. The editors appreciate a brief cover letter that situates your work without over-explaining it. They are particularly drawn to writing that demonstrates a strong sense of voice and a willingness to engage with the ordinary world in an extraordinary way.

We will consider experimental forms but favor traditional literary prose. Read our current and back issues.
