Editorial focus
There’s a sound growing down South… Founded in May 2021, Susurrus is dedicated to spotlighting the talented writers and photographers who make up the American South. We publish artists who think, as we do, that this place is made stronger and more beautiful because of its rich diversity.
Submitting your work
Susurrus accepts submissions year-round via its online portal, with reading periods for the print issue closing on March 1 and September 1. Writers should submit up to five poems, one short story or novel excerpt (under 7,500 words), or one essay (under 6,000 words). Visual artists may submit up to ten images in a single PDF or via a link to an online portfolio. The editors prioritize work that demonstrates a strong sense of craft, a distinctive voice, and a meaningful engagement with the American South—though they interpret 'Southern' broadly and welcome work that interrogates or expands the category. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. All submissions receive a response within three to six months. Payment is in two contributor copies and a modest honorarium. For full guidelines, visit susurrusthemagazine.com/submit.
